White hair appears naturally with age.

On average, white hair appears in a man’s forties, while the first white hairs may appear around the age of 25. In some cases, however, the appearance of white hair may come earlier than expected.

But what is the reason for this phenomenon ?

Age :

White hair appears as a result of depigmentation of the hair.

From a biological point of view, it is the melanocytes (melanin-producing cells) that lose their effectiveness over time. Melanin is the natural pigment that gives colour to your hair.

As everyone is different, this depigmentation does not happen at the same time and place for everyone. Hair can turn white before a beard and vice versa. For some people, the depigmentation of the hair and the beard happens at the same time.

This phenomenon is genetic, so if your parents had white hair or beard at an early age, there is a good chance that this is also the case for you.

Stress :

According to some scientific studies, stress stimulates the melanocyte-producing cells abnormally. And even though one might think that more melanocytes would prevent grey hair, the opposite is true. Because in excess, melanocytes cause the complete disappearance of cells and therefore accelerate the arrival of white hair.

A bad lifestyle :

Diet is one of the causes of the appearance of white hair.

Having a healthy lifestyle and diet affects the quality of the hair, but also its colour.
Hair whitening could be linked to a deficiency of the B group of vitamins, in particular vitamins B12, B9 and B8.

In summary, the appearance of white hair is mainly age-related, but can occur well before the age of 40. White hair can also occur depending on your lifestyle.
